Who is Kenyatta Stewart? A Life of Service, Justice, and Leadership

Kenyatta Stewart’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice. A Paterson native, Stewart grew up witnessing the challenges that working families face—the struggles for fairness, opportunity, and a voice in the system. Rather than standing by, he chose to fight for those in need.

Stewart’s journey led him to become a defender of justice—both inside and outside the courtroom. As a partner at Hunt, Hamlin & Ridley (HHR), he took on cases that mattered—criminal defense, family law, employment disputes, and civil rights violations. His work wasn’t just about legal strategy; it was about restoring dignity to those who had been silenced.

Today, as Corporation Counsel for the City of Newark, he leads a team of attorneys, overseeing the city's legal affairs and public safety initiatives. From holding negligent landlords accountable to ensuring fair treatment for tenants, Stewart has positioned himself as a protector of communities that too often go unheard.

Education & Preparation for Leadership

Stewart's path to advocacy was built on education and hard work. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from William Paterson University, followed by a Juris Doctor from Hofstra University School of Law. But his education extended far beyond textbooks—it was shaped by real-world challenges and a deep understanding of the struggles people face daily.

Fighting for Safer Streets & Stronger Communities

In 2015, Stewart made headlines—not for legal victories, but for something far more profound. At a time when violence threatened to tear his hometown apart, he brokered a truce between three rival street gangs in Paterson. This wasn’t just a political gesture; it was an act of courage and commitment to public safety, proving that real leadership goes beyond policies—it requires action.

His passion for historical justice and education also led to his appointment to the New Jersey Amistad Commission, where he has worked tirelessly to integrate African American history into the state’s curriculum. He understands that empowerment begins with knowledge, and he fights to ensure that future generations learn the full story of our nation’s history.

A Voice That Echoes Beyond the Courtroom

Beyond his legal and public service career, Stewart remains deeply engaged with the community. He uses social media (@blackslaws) as a platform to educate and advocate, ensuring people understand their legal rights, public policies, and the power of civic engagement.

As a mentor and speaker, he has guided young professionals, students, and community leaders on law, civil rights, and leadership development. His message is clear: real change doesn’t happen from the sidelines—it happens when people step up, take action, and fight for what’s right.

Join Kenyatta Stewart’s movement for a stronger 35th District. The fight for justice, opportunity, and fairness starts now.

Kenyatta Stewart is more than a lawyer, more than a public servant—he is a fighter for justice, an advocate for fairness, and a leader committed to building a better future. Whether in the courtroom, at City Hall, or on the front lines of community advocacy, his mission remains the same:

  • Stand up for the voiceless
  • Break barriers for working families
  • Create safer, more prosperous communities

And now, he’s ready to take that fight to Trenton.
